State Requirements for Demographic Data Reporting upon Hospital Discharge: An Overview for State Flex Programs

Abstract

Collection of demographic data by hospitals can enhance doctor-patient interactions, enable more patient-centered care, and inform more equitable distribution of resources. This brief describes findings from an environmental scan of state demographic data reporting requirements for hospitals. While most states require that hospitals report sex, race, and ethnicity demographics in hospital discharge data, different categories and definitions are used among states. Few states require hospitals to report other demographic data including sexual orientation, gender or gender identity, language, disability status, or tribal affiliation. This report highlights unique challenges and considerations relevant to demographic data collection for CAHs.
