This letter to the editors of JAMA responds to "Mortality Rates for Medicare Beneficiaries Admitted to Critical Access and Non-Critical Access Hospitals, 2002-2010" (Joynt et al, April 2013), citing "concerns regarding the data and methods used in this study, as well as the interpretation of results, which reflect a limited understanding of the rural healthcare environment."
